Professional Practice
3. Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning
Reflective Commentary
As a result of planning a series of lessons I have a greater understanding of the importance of knowing the students’ prior learning. Before starting my History and Transport program I completed a KWL Chart with my class. This identified what the students already knew and gave me direction for what they wanted to learn. My next task was to ensure that what the students wanted to learn and their interests married with the curriculum. From here I designed an engaging and motivating series of lessons that were hands-on and inclusive for all students.
Using a range of resources is important to cater for all students’ learning styles. During my practical placement I referred to Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences when devising my lessons. These lessons included using playdough for the kinaesthetic learners, iPads for students to record their reading fluency and expression to cater for the verbal - linguistic learners and sequencing cards to cater for the mathematical - logical learners.
Once I had completed my programs and my Mentor Teacher checked them, there were a few details that needed to be changed or extra components added. We sat together and worked through the programming proformas and discussed administration’s expectations of how much detail was required in each program. This was a valuable process as I was able to work with an experienced teacher to enhance my teaching and learning programs.

Mother's Day Display and Lesson Plan
3.4 Select and use resources
I made a Mother's Day display to celebrate all mums. I asked for a banner from our local shopping centre to place in the display. I also incorporated Literacy and Reading into the display and my lesson. Once we completed our gifts I also placed them on the table.

Action Plan
Since I have completed my practical placement I have not had sufficient time to reflect specifically on my teaching and learning programs. While I know that there were lessons that I was unable to complete due to external factors such as swimming lessons and assembly practice. Ensuring there is sufficient time for reflection at the end of the term will be an area that I will need to focus on as a Graduate Teacher.
